What Is The Perennial Wisdom, And Why Is It Needed Now?

By Linda K. Myers

Before answering the question – what is the Perennial Wisdom?– I’ll go back to when I was 11 years old.  At that age the world really mystified me.  I couldn’t imagine what I would do as an adult in what appeared to me a meaningless life.  I watched my parents go to work, come home tired, and then mom would fix dinner while dad sat, exhausted, watching the news. That routine continued the next day and on and on. For me school was stressful and kids were often mean to each other. What was the point of living?

I was dropped off at Sunday School every week, and although I felt a strong connection to the story of Jesus, that again made the world seem terrible. Killing a loving person like Jesus bewildered me. So, one afternoon, sitting in the yard and thinking about how confusing life was, I decided to pray to Jesus for understanding.  “Jesus, I want you to know I’m on your side.  I know there are other sides.  I have but one thing to ask before I die, please let me know what this world is all about.”  It was the prayer of a child.  Soon the demands of life took over and I fell into the experiences of growing up.

After I became a wife and mother the challenges and responsibilities for raising three children kept me busy. Gradually the children grew and found their own lives. Then, I was again confronted with the puzzle of the meaning of life.  One day a friend said she was going to try something called Rebirthing.  She couldn’t tell me much about it and I had no idea what it was, but I felt a strong need to join her.

I discovered that Rebirthing is a technique that uses extreme breathing to cause more energy (prana) to fill the body. It is designed to release trauma, but in my case it facilitated an out-of-body experience. I popped out of my physical heart and as I lifted out of the body I witnessed pieces of my emotional life – little hurts and traumas – dissolve.  I was drawn up and up.  I sensed a presence on my left shoulder but didn’t focus on it.  I felt complete love and no fear. I stopped the upward rising when I was confronted by an enormous “….. ”  This is where words are useless.  I can say that I contacted a realm beyond our physical existence that was motionless and filled with whole, unlimited potential.  Imagine the enormity of the sky or ocean with nothing in it but tremendous intelligence, power, and love.  As I said, words for this experience only serve to minimize and limit it.  They do not communicate this magnificent, all-consuming awareness.

When I returned to my body, the pranic electrical energy had lit me up.  I was practically shaking with the life force surging through my body. At the time I didn’t know about the etheric spiritual chakra system or how the nervous system can become alive with vibration. I didn’t know what had happened, but it felt to me as though I was taking “a first breath of prana, a first immersion in the waters of life, a first taste of life more abundant.”

I was thrilled to discover that this world existed for me and that there was more to life than I’d known. My search to learn more became my reason for living. Questions flashed non-stop before me:
What is the vibration in my body?
What was the intelligence, power, and love that I witnessed?
Was I more than a physical body?
Are there angels?
Who was on my shoulder as I left my body?

I later found that the drive to learn more was my soul awakening. That had been the missing link in what I’d experienced of life until this point and now my soul was leading me – through the subtle mechanisms of energy – to discover what lies in those boundless worlds I’d stumbled into.

Spiritual books became my lifeline.  When I found the series The Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East, I found my next step.  This led me to study the Perennial Wisdom teachings brought to the west from India and Tibet by Helena Blavatsky, the books of Alice Bailey from the Tibetan Master Djwhal Khul, and eventually a contemporary Perennial Wisdom school – the Arcane School.  When I found this treasure trove of knowledge, I actually fell to my knees in gratitude. I felt my childhood prayer was being answered and my out-of-body experience could be explained.

The Perennial Wisdom, also known as the Ageless Wisdom, does not originate in any single religion or culture but runs like a golden thread through all cultures and religions.  At the beginning of human life on this planet this wisdom was given to us by cosmic, divine, extra-planetary Beings.  My mind was stretched to learn that the solar and cosmic systems are conscious and linked to life on earth by Spiritual Beings who watch and aid those in lower realms.  The beauty and love in this design is astounding.

There is a ‘Plan’ for evolution that includes the different states of consciousness on earth and how humans fit in to the whole divine picture. According to what I learned, the Ancient Wisdom teaches that billions of years in the growth of consciousness have taken place on earth. Life on our planet has evolved from the Mineral, Vegetable, Animal, and Human Kingdoms to the 5th Kingdom – the one of Souls. It was a stunning revelation for me to learn that we continue to be guided from that level and we can cooperate with it when our souls have awakened.

I believe earth and humanity are in a time of great and meaningful change. The Perennial Wisdom forecasts this period of time and gives a path for understanding what lies before us as a species along with what our responsibility is towards contributing to the positive outcome. I think the Perennial Wisdom is more necessary now than ever because of the vision it offers us and the teachings it provides about the evolution of human consciousness.

  5. Sharing of your soul awakening and your journey towards the perennial wisdom is evocative and inspiring – thank you Linda. Our humanity is facing its greatest test, may we move beyond hope to truly expect humanity’s soul awakening in kind, such that we as a whole and together may rise to the challenge of coming of age, despite all the suffering, to find meaning, strength and a unity of Love in compassion for all the living beings we are related to on this small blue planet.
