In 1990, on December 24th, I had an experience of awakening, of “seeing the light.” My husband and I lived in Lawrence, Kansas with our toddler and baby. Earlier that day, my young nieces were dropped off to spend the holiday with us. I was ready for our first “Christmas Craft Day” together, but nothing prepared me for what happened later.
We spent the day with holiday activities – we decorated cookies and wrote letters to Santa. Then the house was quiet, the children were sleeping peacefully under the glow of lights on the fresh-cut Christmas tree. I took a bath, took care of my baby, then sat on the floor and closed my eyes. I spent some time in prayer and asked to know peace and to have the Wisdom to know right action. Right then I felt the energy around me shifting and a light appeared. I had no way of knowing that my spiritual life was about to begin.
My eyes were still closed when the brilliant white Light revealed itself. For a moment I feared I’d be blinded by this otherworldly brilliance. I peeked to see and there were millions of particles of the most beautiful, opalescent, radiant Light. It was like looking directly into headlight beams at night, but numinous. And this Light communicated with me.
As I opened to this unusual experience, a sense of complete peace washed over me. Fear disappeared. In the Light there was only Love. This Light held an awareness of unity and oneness. This Light was familiar and comforting in every way and I felt like I was home again. I remembered.
I had entered a timeless dimension where I could see clearly.
It was like a veil had been lifted and for the first time I could see life as it really is. In this Light, I knew how much we are all loved, that we are never forgotten, that we are always cared for. During this experience of what I now call “Unitive Consciousness,” the Light of the divine high self revealed the eternal nature of soul. It was clear to me that it is our birthright to remember the Light of our soul, to know who we are and why we are here. I could see how it contrives to teach us about our spiritual nature. The simple truth is that this knowledge is hidden in plain sight in our daily lives.
What I can say is that for the next seven days and nights this knowing was open to me. I received “divine downloads” about spiritual law, karma, judgement, free will, and more.
I was shown that the reason we are here is to give and receive love. I could see how our relationships with family and friends serve the evolution of our souls. I received teachings that also gave me a direct experience of where the inspiration for great art, music, science, architecture, and religion originates. I was shown the ways of education in the future. I could see divine order in the chaos in the world. Ultimately, I know we are loved and everything is included in this world of oneness. The inner Light has guided every step I take for more than thirty years. The eye of my heart has remained open.
I began a quest for further understanding after this profound experience. It took me a decade to reconcile the disparity between what I was shown then and what I could see about how we live in this world. And then it has taken 20 more years for me to integrate this transformative experience into my daily life. Thankfully, I was guided to master teachers on this side and the other – I learned that help is available when we ask.
Then, twenty-five years after that day of Light, I met Elmer Green. I had chosen to become involved in hospice work and through that was introduced to him towards the end of his life by William Hale, M.D. who became a friend of Elmer’s after working in earlier years with the group studying biofeedback at the Menninger Clinic.
One of the things Elmer explained to me is that we are given experiences such as mine by grace and we are to use them for the benefit of others. He said we are entrusted with this Wisdom so we can teach future generations.
As I worked to help Elmer, I learned about his extraordinary library which contained books and papers that he had collected beginning early in the 20th century. For example, there were first editions of the Theosophists he had studied – Madame Blavatsky, Alice Ann Bailey, and Henry Steel Olcott. He had duplicates, copies of these books, which he read and reread throughout his life. He left the most interesting margin notes in these working copies. He wanted to use this Wisdom for the benefit of all of us.
Throughout Elmer’s library, we can find evidence that many others have shared their high knowledge about states of consciousness and about Love. His great collection of books and papers was filled with the writing and reflections of those who had direct experience of the true nature of reality. Just one example of what was there was the collected volumes of Sri Aurobindo’s writings which had been hand-printed on handmade paper and bound in pure silk. The volumes were a thank-you gift to Elmer and his wife, Alyce, from Aurobindo’s ashram in Pondicherry, India. There are dozens of books inscribed to the Greens giving thanks for their pioneering work in the study of consciousness.
It was a privilege to help conserve this library, and to become a part of spreading some of the gathered wisdom now in the 21st century.

Carolyn Scripps worked as Elmer Green’s personal assistant during the last three years of his life and she processed his rare transpersonal library and archives. Carolyn was with Elmer when he transitioned to the other side when he was almost 100 years old in 2017.
